Learn To Appreciate the Fog

Do you possess the ability to stay calm through uncertain conditions?

We become. Then, we become great. Oftentimes, we become careless next. Success requires responsibility and with increased responsibility comes the requirement of careful planning. It is easy to go fast when we can see everything. However, when visibility, perspective, and perceptions are challenged, it causes us to slow down and look at situations in-depth and beyond the surface.

There are moments in our lives when we need fog. It is a cloud that touches the ground. Fog can be thin or thick, meaning people have difficulty seeing through it. Fog is dense. It limits visibility. When fog is present, becoming alert on another level is essential. Yes, it is of utmost importance that we learn to appreciate the fog. There is a level of maturity associated with the ability to navigate effectively and efficiently in foggy, unclear conditions.

Studies show that experienced drivers drive faster in clear visibility than novice drivers, yet they reduced their speed more in reduced visibility. Compared to experienced drivers, novice drivers had higher hazard response times, greater speed, and steering variability, and were the only drivers to have collisions. Why? What are the characteristics of the mature which result in fewer accidents and fatalities in life?

"There is more to life than increasing its speed."- Gandhi

Slow down! It may take longer to get to the destination, but safety is worth it. We must understand that just because we are moving frequently and/or fast does not mean we are progressing well. Accept the fact that there might be a better way. Be willing to change directions. Also, be willing to know when to stay the course. It can be tempting to accelerate trying to “lose” the situation which seems to be right on our tail, but that can make our situation more dangerous.

Spend time understanding your destiny. You must realize where you're going and what it will take to get there. Slow down. Focus to maintain visibility. In these moments, learn to appreciate the fog!
